Tips

  • The Emporio skyscraper, formerly Unilever House, is an office building in Hamburg's Neustadt am Dammtorwall 15 district.
    Excerpt from Wikipedia:
Already in the 1950s, the planning for the construction of the administrative headquarters of the then "margarine union" began. The area between Caffamacherreihe, Dammtorwall, Dragonerstall and Valentinskamp and with the streets Fürstenplatz and Ulricussstraße in the Neustadt was one of the last surviving Gängeviertel Hamburg. Due to the narrow and partly dilapidated buildings, including many half-timbered buildings of the 17th to 19th centuries, it was declared a redevelopment area. In 1958, 12,000 square meters of the area were sold to the Margarine Union for DM 3 million (today's purchasing power: € 7.1 million) for the construction of a representative office building, which was intended to upgrade the district.
The construction was carried out by the companies Wayss & Freytag and Walter Bau. Between the laying of the foundation stone in October 1961 and the topping-out ceremony in July 1962, nine months passed. In 1964, the margarine union moved into the building with 2100 employees, who had previously been accommodated at 15 locations in the city ....
The shape and height of the structure were controversial. The central supply tower, which projected more than 15 meters beyond the last floor as a black "stub", was perceived as too distinctive. Due to citizen protests, therefore, the building was already fortified by two storeys in 1964, which left only 7.90 meters of the supply tower, which was also clad in light-colored cast stone slabs.
It was designed by the architects Helmut Hentrich and Hubert Petschnigg and built until 1964 as the German headquarters for the Unilever company. After the company relocated to a new building in HafenCity 2009, also named Unilever House, the house, which has been listed as a listed building since the turn of the millennium, was rebuilt. In 2000, the building was listed as an example of the modernization of Hamburg in the post-war period under monument protection. It has been leased to various parties since spring 2012 under the name Emporio.
