  • The Grossneumarkt is a central place in the Hamburg Neustadt. This is where the streets Alter Steinweg, Neuer Steinweg, Thielbek, Wexstraße, Markusstraße and the First Brunnenstraße merge. The butcher's road that led to Michel has disappeared.
The size of the square with its Piazza-like ambience was perceived by the citizens as something special and led to the saying "here you sit better than on the Grossneumarkt", if you feel particularly comfortable somewhere.
The place gave its name to the surrounding neighborhood. The square is the center of Neustadt, which was built in the 17th century. All streets leading to the new town ended here. It is bordered on the south by the Ludwig-Erhard-Straße (formerly East-West-Straße), in the west by the Holstenwall and in the east by the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße.
The locals like to call it a "village at the feet of Michel".
The neighborhood was spared by the renovations of the 1920s and the bombs of the Second World War largely. However, the upper floors of the listed "Pelikan" pharmacy and the adjoining area around the former slaughterhouse were destroyed. Even the big "Hamburg fire" had not raged in the new city. Here there were still numerous half-timbered houses, including the oldest mud house in the city, the facades, however, were partially plastered.
However, since a preservation was uneconomic, they rebuilt the houses on Peterstraße in the old style. The later resulting tall buildings of Hamburger Sparkasse and the buildings of the insurance Deutscher Ring do not fit into the historic flair.
Due to the construction of housing blocks of the housing association SAGA in the 1980s, the typical narrow streets, often called "gang" in Hamburg due to their narrowness, have disappeared.
Originally, the Grossneumarkt was the central marketplace in the district, called because of its size "Great Neumarkt"; since 1899, the place leads its present name. A weekly market takes place regularly on two days of the week here. From the original outskirts, some classical buildings have been preserved on the northern and eastern fringes.

  • Een prachtige plek midden in de Hamburgse Neustadt. Hier vindt regelmatig een wekelijkse markt plaats. Er zijn ook veel bars en cafés en restaurants die uitnodigen tot een pauze.
