The Canary Islands, like dice thrown at random on a map, are scattered across the northwest of the African continent. Floating in the Atlantic, they stand out for their extraordinary and unique beauty. The islands are home to lush forests, towering cliffs, vast deserts, rolling ravines, endless dunes, majestic volcanic formations and even Spain's highest mountain. Their unique flora and fauna make the islands a natural treasure that is hard to match.
Gran Canaria is the third largest and highest island in the archipelago. It offers an enormous diversity of landscapes and climates. You can see arid desert environments, walk through rainforests, watch the waves crash against cliffs and swim on golden sandy beaches. Gran Canaria was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2005.
A vast network of hiking trails winds through some of the island's most beautiful spots: Tamadaba Natural Park, Rural del Nublo Park, the protected landscape of Fataga, Riscos de Tirajana and the special nature reserve of the Maspalomas Dunes. There are myriad wonders to discover on foot.
In this Collection, I propose a five-day trip from Agaete to Maspalomas. This adventure is accessible to anyone with good levels of fitness and some hiking experience. Although most of the route is technically easy, in the fourth stage there’s an exposed section which is not recommended if you have vertigo. Of course, you can adapt the days to your requirements.
Each Tour finishes somewhere with accommodation and basic services. However, the first and third stages end in a camping area and a refuge, respectively. For this reason, it’s necessary to bring a sleeping bag and a tent or bivouac equipment. Remember to book all overnight stays in advance. You can read more details in the Tour descriptions.
The Canary Islands enjoy good weather all year round, so you can complete this trek at any time of the year. However, bear in mind that in summer temperatures are somewhat higher and the island is much busier. Spring and autumn are the ideal seasons. Whatever time of year you go, check the weather forecast and bring a waterproof jacket and warm layers.
The starting point, Agaete, can be reached by bus from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria or any other large town on the island. The same applies at the end, from Maspalomas. To view timetables and more, visit: guaguasglobal.com/en/home. Gran Canaria has an airport, making it accessible from around the world.
I recommend that you carry plenty of water every day and buy supplies as you pass through the different villages. Use trekking poles and sunscreen and be sure to get up early to see the sites on your own.
Enjoy the incredible variation of Gran Canaria.
