The region of Villuercas, in the province of Cáceres, has spectacular nature and a rich history. The region is known for its mountainous landscapes, green valleys and crystal-clear rivers. In between, the towns and villages boast churches, castles, and monuments dating back to Roman and mediaeval times. The combination of nature and history makes it an ideal destination for cycling.
In this Collection, I suggest following the Las Villuercas Nature Tour, a 62-kilometre (38 mi) adventure that crosses from Logrosán to Puerto de San Vicente. Although you can cycle the whole route in a single day, I recommend dividing it in two so that you can enjoy the villages and incredible natural surroundings to the fullest.
The route is signposted and reasonably well maintained. The bike paths here link to the La Jara and Las Vegas del Guadiana greenways. You could join the three routes to plan a very interesting cycle trip. However, bear in mind that the La Jara greenway is currently closed for maintenance, which is a pity as it’s a truly spectacular route.
You’ll enjoy impressive and varied landscapes ranging from oak forests to bare rocky areas. You pass through meadows and areas inhabited by important protected species such as the Iberian lynx and the imperial eagle. Most of the terrain is made up of good gravel roads, suitable for gravel or MTB bikes. You'll face some steep climbs, so make sure your gear ratio is appropriate.
The best time to ride the Villuercas is in spring when there’s still water, the temperature is pleasant and the meadows are full of flowers. Regardless of the dates you decide to come, check the weather forecast and pack layers.
Carry enough water and food with you each day. Halfway through the first stage, you pass through the village of Cañamero. On the second, you won't have anywhere to resupply until you reach Puerto de San Vicente.
In Alía, the midway point of the Collection, there are several places to stay overnight and places to try delicious local dishes.
Regarding connections, you can get to the start of the Tour, Logrosán, by car or bus from Cáceres or Madrid. From Puerto de San Vicente, you can catch the bus to return to the main cities, although you'll have to change.
Have a good trip!
