Breathtaking views of Lake Lucerne and Lake Brienz, scenic hiking trails over airy ridges and paths across flowering alpine meadows await you on the Obwalden High Trail. In six, relatively strenuous daily stages, the 100-kilometre (60 mi) trail leads you from the summit of Mount Pilatus to the beautiful Bärghuis Schönbüel, the Melchsee-Frutt holiday resort and the panoramic Stanserhorn, high above Lake Lucerne.
Take the world's steepest cogwheel railway up to Mount Pilatus, where a magnificent panorama of lakes and mountains opens up to you. You also discover the Glaubenberg moorland on the way to the old spa town of Schwendi Kaltbad.
As you hike, you can stop to buy delicious regional produce at several alpine farms before you hike over the Mändli ridge with its magnificent views. Peak baggers can take a detour to Höch Gumme at Bärghuis Schönbüel. With fantastic views of Lake Brienz, you descend from the hut to Brünig Pass and into central Switzerland.
You pass the picturesque Seefeldsee and climb to the highest point of the route. You’ll need surefootedness and sturdy shoes on the ascent. Next, you hike through the car-free village of Melchsee-Frutt and the scenic Schluchigrat before finally reaching the Stanserhorn. A magnificent Alpine panorama awaits you here, while a total of ten lakes glisten in the valley below. The last highlight is the ride on the world's first convertible aerial cable car down to Stans.
The best time of year for this adventure is from the end of June to the end of September.
Be sure to book your accommodation and check the trail conditions in advance. At high altitudes, snowfields can persist into the summer. Check the weather forecast before setting off and pack suitable rain gear, warm clothing and sun protection.
You can easily reach the start and end points of the route by public transport. You can find more information about the timetables at sbb.ch/de/fahrplan.html.
I wish you lots of fun on the Obwalden High Trail and many unforgettable moments. Enjoy the magnificent views and the tranquillity.
