Existierten um 1860 rund 150 Windmühlen in Berlin und den umliegenden, noch selbstständigen Dörfern, so sind es auf dem heutigen Stadtgebiet noch acht. Dazu zählen vier Mühlen an ihren ursprünglichen Standorten (Britzer Mühle, Jungfernmühle, Adlermühle, Zehlendorfer Mühle). Hinzu kommen ein Neubau (Bockwindmühle Marzahn) und zwei umgesetzte Mühlen im Deutschen Technikmuseum Berlin, in dem sich ferner eine Wassermühle befindet. Eine weitere umgesetzte Mühle wurde in Gatow aufgebaut.Diese acht Windmühlen verteilen sich auf fünf Holländermühlen und drei Bockwindmühlen.
