      LE FABULEUX - CHAPTER 2
      Longer & Slacker
Last year Le Fabuleux was one of the very few events that we could ride in between two Covid lockdowns. This year the sky is a little sunnier and it was time for Le Fabuleux chapter 2 - Longer & Slacker. When opening the Komoot routes the day before we did scratch our heads a little bit seeing that the guys wanted us to ride 175km's two days in a row. That alone is already something we don't do every week, let alone doing it over gravel and hills. They didn't make a joke when they said it'll be longer, we're not so sure about that slacker part though...Day 1 started in Ham at a youth camping location. Immediately the good vibes where there and we saw some familiar faces among the ~70 participants. The small group means that you can speak with everybody and that everybody feels welcome. It's the power of this small scale event. On Saturday morning we woke up early to have breakfast and pack our stuff. We headed out at 8am for a long-long day in the saddle. It's not often that I get blown away by routes that other people create. That's not because they are not beautiful, but it's because I find that I like to have a certain rhythm/pace/balance in the route that I rarely find. I know from last year that the guys from Le Fabuleux spend tons off time on the route and that they do understand that balance thing that a route needs. They did another splendid job this year. So many beautiful spots, paths. climbs and descends. I was simply smiling for ear to ear. The pace in the beginning was quite high, with flat roads and a big group time & km's flew by. The rougher stuff in the end caused a switch in scenery and added some hours to the ride time :-) But they were fun hours in sunny weather, all the better. It was simply fabulous.DISCLAIMER: Please do not copy or ride this route outside of the Le Fabuleux event. The organization spends a lot of time creating the route, please respect that.

In 2020 the race got cancelled and we could transfer our tickets to this year's race.
So here we are in June '21 and what you are looking at is, yet again, an alternative ride at the Unbound date. We where determined to race this year as it was clear that the race was being held this year. But travelling to the US without a valid reason is still hard and it was very uncertain if we could make it across. We didn't want to waste any more money and chose for the safest option to race in 2022.
We teamed up together with Leandra and headed out at 6:00am sharp. It had been pouring all night and the roads just started to dry up as we reached the first gravel section. The gravel was crispy, mostly hard packed, but above all loaded with puddles and well soaked. The fog that hovered over the fields created a mystical and gloomy setting, just as we like it.
Thanks to the humidity forests were the greenest I've seen them in a long time (we had some extremely dry summer in NL the last years). Together with the fog it sometimes felt like we were riding in some kind of a rain forest, pretty special to be honest.
As the day progressed we left the beautiful and typical Achterhoek landscape behind us and set course to the Veluwe. Where our route connected with a route that Erwin created. And well, the Veluwe is just magical, any time a year. The gravel was amazing, luckily Erwin is a decent fellow who spared our souls with a piece of forgiving cycle path in between the grueling gravel roads.
We touched up on all the amazing places that the Veluwe has to offer. From the Loenermark to the Kroondomeinen going back over Planken Wambuis. It was all there, the National Gravel Monument at the Deelerwoud, the iconic Paalweg in the Kroondomeinen followed by the true Unbound-like Asselseweg and of course the wide open gravel road straight through
      Uddelsche Buurtveld.
I feel like this ride was a true honor to the iconic race with plenty of gravel. A beautiful day with the best circumstances we could ever wish for. Not too hot, not too cold. Just plain perfect, that would be a good summary of this ride! Please have a look at Erwin's route: komoot.nl/tour/171870855

The forest of Montferland is a great area to ride bikes, of any sort to be honest.Along the perimeter of the forest there is a MTB track that gets a lot of good reviews after it has been rebuild in late 2020. I often like to ride around the forest on the wide open gravel roads on my gravelbike, but sometimes I like it a bit rougher. This route is a kind of combination between the singletracks of the MTB track and those wide open gravel roads. Please be warned that this route is for advanced cyclist only (especially when ridden on a gravel bikes) and that a MTB vignet is mandatory. Please find details here (in dutch):
