Over Söhni 🏃

Eger is one of the most important cities in the west of the Czech Republic with a history going back to the 9th century and at the same time the gateway to the world-famous spa triangle Karlsbad, Marienbad and Franzensbad. The St. Nicholas Church and Elisabeth Church from the 12th century consists of a three-aisled, late Gothic hall with an early Gothic presbytery and two Romanesque towers on both sides. The lower floors of the towers, the western step portal and the figural motifs in the front of the northern vestibule have been preserved from the original late Romanesque basilica. The ornate vestibules on the western, northern and southern sides were built in the pseudo-Gothic style (19th century). The Eger Castle was built at the end of the 9th century on the foothills of the mountains above the Eger River. Around 1125 a stone castle was built from the Slavic fortress, which became the administrative center of the Egerland. In 1167 this area was given to Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa from the Staufer dynasty, who came to Eger personally in 1179. This visit caused the conversion of the original castle into an imperial palace, the core of which was formed by the Romanesque palace, the black tower intended for defense and the chapel. At the time of the Czech kings, the Palatinate became a royal castle. The castle area underwent a fundamental change in the Baroque period when the castle was converted into a citadel due to the new city fortifications. The Bismarck Tower, which is on the 637 m above sea level. N.N. high GrĂŒnberg near Eger was originally just a wooden 14 meter high viewing platform, built in 1891. It was demolished in 1909 because of its poor condition. As early as the summer of 1909, construction began on an 18-meter-high stone tower with 71 steps, which was then decorated with German motifs and a sculpture by Chancellor Otto von Bismarck on October 3, 1909, and was ceremoniously handed over to the city of Eger. After World War II, the tower was one of the secrets of the so-called Iron Curtain, because it was in a restricted area until the fall of communism. For 40 years only the border guards knew this forbidden place and later also the carefully checked, selected employees of the adjacent television station. Only they knew about the stone lookout tower on the summit, which according to the maps of the time no longer existed. Many thought the tower had been demolished, the younger generation knew nothing of its existence anyway. In 2005 the city of Eger had the tower completely renovated at a cost of approx. CZK 2 million and then it was reopened to the public.

Nice evening round with the Spatzl through the Kainachtal and back with full pockets. The two giant hazelnuts are probably the biggest I've ever found ...

During this little evening round, which began with a big rubber duck on the Wiesent and ended with a shower 🚿 from above, I spontaneously remembered the old hit by Frank Zander, which I haven't heard for a long time:

Have a wonderful weekend everyone 😘

Our organization has had a school fee sponsorship project since 1999, which campaigns for children in Senegal in West Africa to be able to go to school. Although there is compulsory schooling there, the state does not pay enough attention to education and there are far too few schools, especially in rural areas. This means that children do not have the opportunity to learn to read, write and do arithmetic. But without a proper education there is no way out of poverty.
Since the state is not in a position to regularly give subsidies for teachers' salaries, parents have to pay school fees, which they are usually unable to do because they do not have a regular income themselves. Since then, we have been giving children a chance for their future by sponsoring school fees. We now support around 1,000 children at 20 elementary schools, kindergartens and high schools. I have already been to Senegal five times in the past and have coordinated the sponsorships on site and had and have several sponsored children myself, all of whom I know personally. In addition, every sponsor has the opportunity to get to know their sponsored child personally. For a manageable annual fee, a child can thus be able to attend primary, secondary or secondary school.
The children themselves write a small letter to their sponsor 2-3 times a year, which is sent to us as collective mail and is then distributed on site by volunteers. I take on this task here in our little town. That's why I do this round a couple of times a year. 😊

The more than 3,500 hectare Döberitzer Heide is a unique natural paradise and an oasis of untouched wilderness at the gates of Berlin. The former military training area - owned by the Heinz Sielmann Foundation since 2004 - is home to over 5,000 animal and plant species that have been displaced elsewhere and is under nature protection.
The circular route through the sandy dune area leads along extensive heather areas, which are characterized by the characteristic common heather, past the Ferbitzer Bruch wetland and through light forest areas with their stock of oaks and birches. With a little luck you can see bison, Przewalski's horses or red deer during the hike. The observation tower on the Finkenberg is about halfway through the route. Erected on the highest elevation of the Döberitzer Heide, the 13 m high tower allows a magnificent panoramic view as far as Berlin and over the Havelland.
