      The area:
The high-altitude hike on the Lötschberg south ramp is divided into two parts. The route from Hohtenn to Ausserberg is known as a classic. The eastern continuation from Eggerberg to Brig has only been signaled for a few years. The high path on the sunny slope offers beautiful views of the valley floor of the young Rhone. If it is supplemented by the ascent from Visp, the result is a varied day tour.
      The route:
From the Visp train station, follow the Lonza to the roundabout at Baltschieder, then climb up to Eggerberg and turn into the Valais Sonnenweg. The high trail first runs on a road, then follows an old irrigation ditch (bisse) and later the Lötschberg mountain route. Afterwards, you walk through an extensive forest area, which is artificially irrigated in between (take rain protection with you). Passing the underground Guard Museum, you descend to Brig.

Peaceful silence rests over the lonely forest landscape of Prada above Bellinzona. But suddenly the idyll tilts into the ghostly. Piles of rubble and crumbling stone walls appear between the trees. At this point there was once a village with stately stone houses and simple huts. When the plague raged almost 400 years ago, the settlement was abandoned and it fell apart. Today, the ruins are an oppressive and at the same time enchantingly beautiful memorial of transience.
      The route:
Bellinzona has impressive, well-preserved medieval fortifications. The best view of the two lower castles, Castelgrande and Montebello, is from Castello Sasso Corbaro. This can be reached from the train station on stairs and corridors via Artore. You can get back to the city via Pian Laghetto and through the abandoned village of Prada. From there, a steep stone slab path leads down to the Ravecchia district.

      The area:
Graubünden is not entirely mountainous - with the Rhine Valley, the canton also has an extensive lowland. Thanks to the location of the foehn, the area has a favorable climate and is therefore ideal for viticulture. The 30 km long wine hiking trail runs through the length. The northern half is known for the Bündner Herrschaft. But the southern section is also worthwhile. It leads through vineyards, meadows and forests and also past various wine cellars.
      The route:
Through the old town of Chur it goes into the adjacent forest and via Eulengut to Fürstenwald. This is where the wine hiking trail begins. It leads through the forest to the Maschänser Rüfi, then on beautiful old paths lined with many dry stone walls, across pastureland to Trimmis. At the Molinära farmstead and through the Scheidrüfi you get to Zizers and along the street to the neighboring village of Igis. At the height of Marschlins Castle you leave the wine hiking trail and hike via Rütihof to Landquart.

      The area:
On the north side, the Rossberg slopes gently towards the Zugerberg area, while the south side slopes down with a sharp edge. Here the Goldau landslide broke loose in 1806: huge masses of rock spilled the valley floor and killed 457 people. A technically demanding mountain hiking trail runs through the landslide area and gives an insight into the former crack zone.
      The route:
The Schwyzer Höhenweg leads steeply from the village of Goldau via Härzigwald and Ochsenboden to the Gnipen viewpoint. Although the path runs outside the landslide area, you have a good view of the wilderness, which is characterized by mighty Nagelfluh blocks. The descent on the Goldau landslide trail is even more interesting, but also more difficult. Past edgy boulders and barren trees, it goes to the Schuttwald junction and from there in a direct line to Goldau. You will return to the train station via the zoo.

      The area:
The river, to which the canton of Thurgau owes its name, has been straightened in various sections and bordered by dams. But if you follow your course, you will still experience a lot of nature. The Thurweg is available to hikers for this purpose. Between Weinfelden and Frauenfeld it runs mostly on meadow and forest paths close to the water. The hike therefore shows only slight differences in altitude.
      The route:
After a somewhat monotonous entry across residential and industrial areas of Weinfelden, you reach the floodplain forest at the Ganggelisteg, where you swivel into the hiking trail leading down the river. After the crossing at Amlikon, you come to the wooden bridge built in 1837 at the Eschikofen customs house. The following 30 minutes of walking are a bit noisy because of the nearby motorway. It gets calmer again on the beaver nature trail near Pfyn. Through the extensive wetlands of the Grosse Allmend and then through the Murg-Auen-Park you reach the center of Frauenfeld.

      The area:
Only a range of hills separates the largest city in Eastern Switzerland from the Appenzellerland. It offers a beautiful view of the Alpstein area and attractive views of the Gallus town. The landscape west of it is quite different in the valleys of Urnäsch and Sitter, where a number of traffic routes cross the waters on bridges that are just as diverse. The St. Gallen bridge path opens up this unusual variety of buildings.
      The route:
From the St. Gallen train station it goes up through the old town to the Mühlegg, then on the scenic high path over the Bernegg to Riethüsli and via Solitüde to Haggen. If you walk under the Haggenbrücke, a record-high iron truss construction, you come to the Wattbachtobel. Several old wooden bridges line the path. The Sitter Viaduct, the highest railway bridge in Switzerland, is crossed below. The bridge path leads along the Sitter to Spisegg. You return to the St. Gallen train station via the Rosenberg.

      The area:
Concrete and steel dominate the landscape around the terminals at Zurich Airport. The slope area is completely different: where you only take off and land, there is plenty of free space - and a surprising natural diversity. Litter meadows, flat bogs and ponds provide a habitat for rare plant and animal species. When an airplane is not taking off or landing, you can hear crickets chirping, croaking frogs and calling the cuckoo.
      The route:
The starting point of the airport tour is the entrance to the airport shopping. The consistently wheelchair-accessible route begins and ends horribly, namely on sidewalks along busy streets lined with car parks and freight buildings. But soon the landscape is getting greener. Along the Himmelbach it goes to the nature reserve Bachenbülacher Allmend, then past the end of the slope to Oberglatt. Following the Glatt, one crosses the nature reserve of the Glatt old runs; after you have passed the ARA Kloten, you get back to the airport main entrance.

In the middle of the densely built-up plateau, wide and lonely floodplain forests still characterize the Aare's watercourse. A very nice section is roamed on the hike from Olten to Aarau. The riverside paths follow the natural course of the Aare for longer distances, away from parallel power plant channels. The floodplain landscape in the Däniken river loop, in the immediate vicinity of the Gösgen nuclear power plant, is particularly picturesque.
      The route:
It is only a few steps from the underpass of the Olten station to the Aare. The hike along the riverbank leads first towards Winznau, then on the extensive Schacheninsel between the canal and the old river at the foot of the nuclear power plant cooling tower. As lively as a young mountain stream, the Aare flows here between unobstructed bank sections. The Bally Park leads to Schönenwerd, passes the Schachenwald and the Aarauer Schachen and finally reaches the city center of Aarau.

As typically Bernese as the Emmental may be, the Emme is also a Solothurn river: between Zuchwil and Luterbach, below the canton's capital, it flows into the Aare. Emmenspitz is called the place of confluence. It can be reached on an easy, varied circular hike that leads over hilly country with alpine views and through floodplain forests to a postcard-worthy view of the old town of Solothurn.
      The route:
Without hard work there is no price - from the starting point in Solothurn it is first necessary to cross the residential areas of Zuchwil on sidewalks and quarter streets. After the Birchiwald, however, a beautiful panorama opens up: over the gently undulating lower Emmental you can see the summit chain of the Bernese Alps. Via Bleichenberg and through the Dittibergwald you descend to the road bridge over the Emme at Derendingen and follow the watercourse down to the Emmenspitz. Along the Aare it goes back to Solothurn.

In Interlaken, evening is not just a time, but also a location: When you talk about the Abendberg there, you mean a hill in the southwest of the urban village. It offers a beautiful view of Lake Brienz and the "Bödeli", the flat alluvial floor of the Lütschine with the settlement areas of the Interlaken region. The circular hike there has a number of forest passages and is therefore also suitable for hot summer days.
      The route:
From the Interlaken West train station it goes to the Waldhütte First on the Grossen Rugen, then up a narrow path to the Abendberg. The building there served in the 19th century as a sanatorium for young mentally disabled people, later as a hotel. Today it is used privately. Via Ingelschwand you descend to the "Wilderswil Nature Garden". Passing the Unspunnen ruins, you reach the Little Rugen, where the Ringweg (a themed path via the hotel pioneer Conrad von Rappard and his family) leads back to Interlaken West.
