  • The Salzgittersee is a 2.1 km long and 0.8 km wide lake in the west of Salzgitteraner district Lebenstedt, Lower Saxony. The 75-hectare man-made lake is a 25-acre island, which can be reached via a bridge.
The first considerations for the creation of a recreational area in the lowlands of the small rivers Fuhse and Flote (also Flothe, a tributary of the Fuhse) come from the mid-1930s, but only in 1958 there were first concrete plans and 1959 the surveying work of Fuhsetales were recorded. In order to facilitate the financing of the project, the company Steine und Erden GmbH (later FELS-Werke, a company of the former Salzgitter AG) transferred the economic exploitation of the gravel deposit in the future area of the lake. On the west side of the lake, a gravel and a concrete plant were built, in which the dredged gravel was further processed. The gravel extraction, which was operated at the end only on the north shore, was finally discontinued in 1976.
The groundbreaking ceremony to start the dredging work was on 5 October 1960. Already on 27 May 1963, a part of the previously 34 ha lake was released for the bathing and water sports. In the following years, the planning of the size of the lake was constantly expanded, in 1967 it was already calculated with a water surface of 42 ha, in 1968 it was 50 ha and the final planning target since April 1972, an area of 75 ha. The Fuhse was relocated between 1964 and 1971 in two steps to the west, so that they no longer flowed through the lake. Thus, the lake has no aboveground inflow and is fed only by a strong groundwater flow (16 l / s), which runs parallel to the Flote in the gravelly underground.
The 25 ha large island piled up during the dredging of the lake was connected to the western shore in 1974 by a pylon bridge. In 1976/77, an ice rink was built near the bridge. A total of 20 hectares was created around the Salzgittersee for playing, recreational activities and recreation
