St. Franciscuskerk in Schwarzenbek.
Na bijna een jaar bouwen werd op 20 oktober 1895 de neogotische Franziskuskirche ingewijd als protestantse kerk. Het verving de gelijknamige vakwerkkerk, die op dezelfde plaats stond en werd gebouwd in 1748 en in 1894 werd afgebroken vanwege verval. De huidige kerk, met een hoge toren voor Lauenburg-normen, werd gebouwd door de bouwmeester Johann Prösch volgens de plannen van de Hamburgse architect Pieper.
Binnen in de kerk bevinden zich tal van kunstschatten, zoals de klokken uit 1628 en 1645 en de olieverfschilderijen met de pastoors Wagner en Genzken. Een kopie van een schilderij van de Vlaamse schilder Peter Paul Rubens toont de klaagzang van Christus en dateert uit 1650. Er zijn ook verguld kelken uit de 17e en 18e eeuw, wafer dozen en dozen, een zilveren communie kruik en een altaar kandelaar uit 1603.
De originele altaarramen, die bijbelse taferelen toonden en het Reformatieverhaal uitbeeldden, werden vernietigd in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden ze ommuurd totdat ze in 1993 werden heropend en opnieuw ontworpen met afbeeldingen van St. Franciscus.

Already from afar, you can see the St. Francis Church, because its pointed neo-Gothic tower significantly shapes the cityscape of Schwarzenbek. And when the traffic comes to rest at night and the hustle and bustle of the day subsides, only the illuminated tower remembers that there had been a church here for many centuries. Here on the market square in the center of Schwarzenbek, opposite the modern city hall is now already the third church in the same place.
Before 1250, the knight Schwartebeke had built his castle and provided for first settlers.
But the Schwarzenbeker wanted to have their own church. And so Duke Francis II (1581-1619), the patron of that time, probably had a first church built in 1605, which he dedicated to Saint Francis, probably not uninfluenced by his own name.
But the church building (probably made of wood) survived only about 150 years until a storm destroyed it in 1747. Just one year later, the patron had a new church built for the 420 inhabitants of Schwarzenbek, a real half-timbered church of which black-and-white photographs still exist today. But even this church was not very lucky: it is said to have burned out during the Thirty Years War, so that the Schwarzenbeker had to go back to Brunstorf for worship. And about 150 years after its inauguration in 1894, the St. Francis Church had to be demolished due to structural defects and dilapidation.
The present church was built a year later, in 1895 in the neo-Gothic style.
The single-aisled brick building with its furnishings is essentially preserved to this day in its original form. Only the war left its mark: the windows, which were destroyed in the Second World War, were replaced by simple leaded glass during the major refurbishment in the mid-fifties. In addition, the community got a new organ.
Bells from the first church (1628 and 1645) are still beating in the 52 meter high church tower. In 1992, the church tower received a new copper roof, and since 2006, the almost illegible numbers of the clocks have been replaced by brightly lit, the Schwarzenbeker can read the time from afar.
