Tips
  • Seligenstadt is a town in the district of Offenbach in Hesse. It lies on the Main and was of great importance in the Carolingian period. The city is located in the east of the district about 25 km southeast of Frankfurt am Main. The river here forms the border with Lower Franconia in Bavaria.
Around the year AD 100, during the reign of the Roman emperor Trajan, a cohort fort was built in the area of today's Seligenstadt marketplace and parts of the present-day old town, the Castrum Selgum. The cohort stationed there was responsible for the safety of the Main Limes section (also: Upper Germanic Limes). With the fall of the Limes during the Alamanni storms around the year 260 AD, the fort was abandoned, and the Romans withdrew behind the Rhine line again. The early medieval settlement "Mulinheim superior", Obermühlheim, was built on the ruins of the former fort and on the present monastery area in the valley section of the Breitenbach stream. The earliest known written mention of Seligenstadt, at that time as Obermühlheim, goes back to the donation of Ludwig I. to Einhard in Michelstadt and dated, according to a copy of the deed of donation of January 11, 815.
Legend has it that the town was renamed not because of the bones of St. Peter and St. Marcelinus, but because the counselor and biographer of Charlemagne, who was in love with his daughter Emma, fled. He lived with her in Obermulinheim. One day the Emperor moved through the city and entered the inn where his daughter Emma was working. She served him pancakes, and the emperor recognized the incomparable taste. Thereupon the well-known saying "blessed be called the city, since I found again my daughter Emma", which still today on the oriel of the so-called Einhardhauses (renewed 1596) is to be found in Seligenstadt. As a result, the city was called blessed, the name Seligenstadt was born.
