  • The Hanauer Bismarcksäule is in Hesse the third and last built tower after the German student body awarded Bismarck pillar design "Götterdämmerung" by architect Wilhelm Kreis. In contrast to the Bismarck pillars in Marburg and Kassel, a pure pillar of fire (without a lookout function) was built in Hanau. The construction of this Bismarck tower was initiated in 1900 by the National Liberals Association in Hesse. The city of Hanau and the district of Hanau jointly decided to build this Bismarck column. In 1901, the building committee issued a call for donations and clarified the location issue. The location of the tower was chosen as the spa town of Wilhelmsbad near Hanau. In 1904, the foundation stone was laid for the pillar. As building material, roughly carved basalt was selected from the quarries near Wilhelmsbad and Steinheim near the site. The 18 m high building was erected as a fire pillar without a lookout function.
On the east side of the tower is the only ornament an imperial eagle relief with the serpent of discord and the Bismarck coat of arms (including the inscription "BISMARCK"), on the north side is an inscription panel with "Otto von Bismarckdaten" appropriate. On all sides of the tower (except the east side) a narrow slit of light is embedded in the middle of the upper part of the tower shaft. On the south side of the tower there is a small exit above the ridge, which served to reach the fire bowl. On the top of the tower, a round iron fire bowl was installed on a rack. This was fired with rosin (resin product) and tallow. The burning time was about 2 hours. In 1905, the column was inaugurated with great participation of the population. At nightfall, the fire bowl was first ignited. In 2005, a narrow metal staircase was pulled into the tower. On the day of the open monument in September 2005, the column was first fired after many decades. The tower monument is today under the Hessian monument protection law
