De Schillerplatz

After the city plan of the city Mönchengladbach was adopted in 1863, the development of the area called Gründerzeitviertel was started. At his expense and largely on his land, the entrepreneur Franz Niessen built the current Schillerstraße. This was in 1875 therefore given the name Franzstraße. In 1899, his descendants sold the property Margarethenstraße 44 to the city, so that a place could be created there. In addition, there were four other properties that the city also acquired by various owners in 1899.The Schillerplatz with the memorial, around 1935.As a result, a place was created, which initially had no official name, but soon spoke in anticipation of Schiller Square. The formal designation took place only in 1909, when the Franzstraße was renamed Schillerstraße. At this time already stood on the square a kiosk and first public green spaces were created. At the place of the savings bank branch established in 1966 stood the Schiller pharmacy.In July 1914 Mayor Hermann Piecq attended the laying of the foundation stone for a weather house. This gem was canceled in 1941. After the plants had been neglected during the First World War, took place at the beginning of the 20s, a new investment in the square. regiments between 1914 and 1918, the Schillerplatz 1932/33 was redesigned. Created by Fritz Coubillier and co-financed by the veterans of the regiment, the monument survived the Second World War largely intact. In the early post-war years, the place in the old form was again made handsome. As part of the redesign of the square in the late 70s, in favor of the construction of a well and the redesign of the playground, the green space was pushed back.
