Tips
  • The old church of St. Nicolai and the round cemetery have disappeared almost without a trace, which once formed something like the center of the Hagenhufendorf Altenhagen.
The small church, in which the inhabitants of Altenhagen, Hagenburg and Mesmerode went until the middle of the 16th century, did not stay in the village. Long felt as too narrow and also dilapidated, the building including the tower was demolished in 1873. The rubble was used to extend the highway to Steinhude. From the old Nicolai church, the bells, the clock tower, a chandelier and the altar candlesticks were taken over. The oblate box from 1693 was also used.
The construction of a new, large church in Hagenburg could only begin in 1869, after decades of disputes over the right location. The not insignificant financial support of the Schaumburg-Lippe Fürstenhaus made it possible to hire the Hanoverian master builder Conrad Wilhelm Hase ("brick hare") for the construction.
Hase fulfilled the mission to build a "widely visible" powerful church "in hitherto completely free field". During a refurbishment in the early 1960s, the side gables on the roof were removed. The self-supporting tower and the nave were renovated in the 1990s. For its 125th anniversary in 1996, the church has been given the name of its predecessor St. Nicolai Church. For the construction of the church and the parish had to make room on the northern side of the street Freihof Engelke. His owner had gone bankrupt in 1867 and fled overnight to America. The tradition of Posthalterei in Hagenburg (1688-1860), which gave the place a certain importance, had ended shortly before. As travelers on the east-west connection (Berlin) Hannover-Leese-Bohmte-Diepenau-Osnabrück made among others Frederick I of Prussia and the Russian Tsar Peter the Great stop in place.

  • Kerken zijn mooi om naar te kijken, maar je kunt er binnen niet rond fietsen.
