Around 925, the castle Windischleuba was founded, which served as Grenzveste to protect Altenburg. Around 1244 Heinrich von Kohren and Hugo zu Stolberg were the owners of the castle. Later, shortly after 1300, the feudal rule over Windischleuba passed from the burgraves of Meissen to the burgraves of Leisnig. After several owners Windischleuba remained until 1650 in the possession of those of the Gabelentz. In 1632, Castle Windischleuba burned down in the Thirty Years' War. In 1677 Georg Ernst von Zehmen acquired from the Fürstl. Retirement chamber the manor Windischleuba with his castle. The Windischleubaer castle had expired and was considered hardly recoverable. Münchhausen built it up again completely until 1886, reconstructing the old forms. In this state, the castle is preserved to this day. In 1920 they retreated to Apelern and gave the castle to her son of the same name, the nationalist ballad writer Börries von Münchhausen (* 1874, † 1945), who lived there with his family. His only son, Börries, died in 1934 at the age of 29, and the poet's wife died in January 1945. In March of the same year, a month before the invasion of US troops, Börries von Münchhausen, who was arrested by the Reich Ministry for Popular Enlightenment and Propaganda , Joseph Goebbels and Adolf Hitler 1944 compiled, 36-sided Gottbegnadeten list, in the category writers, was listed leading, suicide.
