Tips
  • On the Frankenberg southwest of the historic town of Goslar stands the striking church of St. Peter and Paul. Also known as the Frankenberg Church, this church was built in the 12th century as a three-nave, cross-shaped basilica. A first written reference to a church building on this site dates back to 1108. Presumably, however, this early documentary reference refers to a predecessor building of today's church.
The church on the Frankenberg was closely connected with the miners and ironworkers living in the immediate vicinity. The church bells in recent days heralded the miner's shift. Over the centuries, the building underwent various transformations. The originally Romanesque church therefore also has elements of Gothic and Baroque.
From about 1234 to 1837, the Frankenberg church served as a monastery church for the neighboring convent of the penitent sisters of St. Magdalene. The former monastery building, which is only a few meters away from the church, now houses a residential facility for the elderly. They are private areas and therefore can not be visited.
The massive westwork of the Frankenberg church, including the two towers, was once part of the city fortification of Goslar. In 1783 these towers had to be demolished because of dilapidation. Subsequently, the construction of the characteristic Baroque dome over the belfry took place. In the 1870s, the church was extensively renovated.
Inside the Frankenberger church are u.a. particularly worth mentioning are murals from the 13th century and a wooden carved altar in the Baroque style. Above the south portal are also the two patron saints Peter and Paul shown.
The church on the Frankenberg is open daily from April to October from 9am to 6pm. Visits during the winter months as well as guided tours are also possible by prior arrangement. From the city center you can reach the church in a few minutes on foot.
