Tips
  • To compensate for the ever-increasing labor shortage, concentration camp inmates were also deployed in the Peenemünde research institutes starting in spring 1943. The concentration camp Karlshagen I existed from May 1943 to early April 1945 in the immediate vicinity of the Community Camp East. For this purpose, existing barracks were used, which were originally built for Wehrmacht members. The camp consisted of five prisoner barracks surrounded by a barbed-wire fence. Several small bunkers for the guards and watchtowers secured the area. The camp also included a roll call area, a washhouse and the kitchen. Off to the side was a flat storehouse. In this camp, which was under the administration of the concentration camp Ravensbrück, 1500 male prisoners of different nationalities were accommodated. The prisoners were used primarily in the area of the Air Force Testing Center. So they had to carry out earthworks on the airfield, refuel aircraft and, after air raids, expose the unexploded ordnance for disarming. During the testing of the flying bomb Fi 103 ("V1") the prisoners had to recover the 150 kg heavy launcher of the launch pad (Walter-Schleuder) from the marshy reed belt. Due to the heavy physical work, the completely inadequate nutrition and the often inhuman treatment many prisoners were killed. In particular, the death of 248 prisoners in the period from May 1943 to March 1945 is documented. In February 1945, the concentration camp inmate Michael Dewjatajew and nine other inmates from the nearby airfield managed a spectacular escape with a German plane over the front line in the Soviet Union. The dissolution of the concentration camp labor camp Karlshagen I had already begun at the end of January 1945. At the beginning of April 1945, the last 200 prisoners were transported to the concentration camp "Dora".The campground was made accessible again during the International Summer Camp 2006. Thereby u.a. Foundation remains of a barrack and a bunker made visible again. The foundation for the barracks was not concrete, but wooden posts. In a pit with the dimensions of the barracks, piles were piled on which planks and boards were fixed, which formed the bottom of the barracks. The barrack was then built over it. The remains of the piles are still visible in the pit today. In this location further monument preservation measures will be carried out in the future.
