S.H.E. Verbinding zagerij Herzberg

On the route of the former South Harz Railway (SHE) a bike path leads from Walkenried to Braunlage (around 25 km). The already disused railway line in the early 1960s leads with a moderate slope from a height of 275 m above sea level. NN to over 600 m and down to Braunlage (550 m).
The fascinating forest and mountain landscape is also to cope for the less experienced cyclists, even if the quality of the bike path is in some cases very much in need of improvement. Even the signage gets no good grades, as the small signs at important junctions is easy to miss and overall a uniform logo and the standard bicycle lane signage is missing. As a relief, it is recommended for people unfamiliar with the area to load the GPS track on their device (if you have a GPS device), if you do not want to spend time searching unnecessarily.
As a family bike path, the gravel and grit covering the mountain route but rather less suitable and especially for children's bikes with their small wheels, these are not really good conditions. Here only an asphalt surface would be really helpful, as it has indeed been realized in the mountain route of the Mommelsteinradwegs (Thuringia). Criticism is also attached to the road crossings (Kaiserweg and B4 / B242), where the cars and motorcycles pass at high speed.
The 2008 gravel bike path then ends at the parking Kaiserweg, from there is the old railway line is not passable. After overcoming a short climb on a rough forest road and then a short descent, you then reach the path on the railway line again. Also continue towards Braunlage, at the intersection with the B4 a short piece is not developed.
