Sigward Kirche Idensen

De Sigwardskirche is 365 dagen per jaar betrouwbaar elke dag geopend van 10.00 tot 18.00 uur. Je hebt geen sleutel nodig. Naast het kerkgebouw met de romaanse wand- en plafondschilderingen is ook de privékapel in de toren de moeite waard. Buiten is er zitgelegenheid en een picknicktafel, evenals een openbaar toilet.

De rijke wand- en plafondschildering is een van de geheel onvervalste en mooiste van de Romaanse. De cyclus van beelden is gebaseerd op een overkoepelend theologisch programma. In de gewelfde velden van de drie jukken worden scènes uit het Oude Testament verplicht gecontrasteerd met afbeeldingen van het Nieuwe Testament. Desastreuze gebeurtenissen zoals de zondvloed, de bouw van de toren van Babel en Sodom en Gomorra worden opgelost door de heilsgeschiedenis. De majestas domini troont boven alles in de apsis calotte als een visioen van de eindtijd en het paradijs. De boodschap is de opstandingsgedachte als teken van hoop en verzoening. De zijkapellen zijn versierd met taferelen uit de missie- en levensverhalen van de apostelen Petrus en Paulus. De schilderijen worden door kunsthistorici beschouwd als "het oudste typologische picturale programma op Duitse bodem".
De tijdgeest rond 1500 zette onze voorouders ertoe aan om de foto's te vergoelijken met witte kalk. Conrad Wilhelm Hase ontdekte de middeleeuwse schilderijen in 1858. De laatste onthulling vond plaats in 1930-1934.
De staat van de fresco's wordt regelmatig onderzocht en is onderwerp van onderzoek door wetenschappers, bijvoorbeeld van het Fraunhofer Instituut. Het laatste monitoringrapport van Bernhard Recker beschrijft de situatie in detail.
In 2003 schreef Marcel Schwarzenberger een artikel over de fresco's in de Sigwardkerk in het geschiedenistijdschrift Chronico.

A gem of medieval wall painting
The Old Church in Idensen was built on behalf of Bishop Sigward von Minden (died 1140) as an own, probably also as a Church of the Holy Sepulcher. The well-traveled, learned client belonged to the closest circle to Emperor Lothar III.
It is made of carefully carved sandstone blocks. The simple structure is preceded by a west tower.
The one-nave church room, which is divided into three vaulted areas by wall panels with half-columns and belt arches, is more richly presented. The highlight is the apse, marked by eight slender columns of green stone. The nave opens to the north and south in two side chapels with altarpieces framed by pillars. The upper walls of the church and the vaulted ceilings carry extraordinarily high-quality murals from the construction period around 1130. In keeping with the architecture, they become one
"Gesamtkunstwerk" of international standing together.
Since the 15th century, the painting was covered by several Kalkanstriche and remained so
Received posterity. The murals were rediscovered at the end of the 19th century, but were completely uncovered until 1930/34. Since then, several elaborate conservation measures were necessary.
Today, the church is air-conditioned to keep fluctuations in humidity within narrow limits. This is intended to stabilize the salts contained in the paint layer.
Historical murals are valuable cultural-historical documents. They can give today's viewer an insight into the medieval world of imagination. In Idensen, Bishop Sigward commissioned unknown artists to create a comprehensive program of paintings: in the nave, three scenes from the Old Testament are typologically juxtaposed with those of the New Testament in order to illustrate theological content.
The first typological couple represents the baptism and Noah's Ark.
The second pair faces the Tower of Babel of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost.
Of the third couple, only the scene from the last judgment is clearly visible. On the Old Testament side, this is probably juxtaposed with the story of Sodom and Gomorrah.
All three couples are oriented toward the representation of the Majestas Domini (god as ruler of the world) in the apse and are held together by it.
