Tips
  • Cape Town is a popular destination for tourists, especially between October and March. Tourism is considered an important economic factor for the city and the surrounding suburbs.
Popular attractions include Table Mountain, but also the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront and the Victorian Port, which offers tourists a variety of boutiques, restaurants, museums, Nobel Square or the Two Oceans Aquarium. The waterfront in San Francisco served as a model. Open all year is the Cape Town Opera.
The city center offers a variety of museums and historic buildings, including the Castle of Good Hope, South Africa's oldest surviving building. It was built in 1666 on the model of baroque fortresses, but was never involved in hostilities. Other places of tourist importance are the City Hall, built in 1905, the St. Georges Cathedral, home of the Anglican Archbishop, the National Gallery and the National Museum. In the city center, Long Street is one of the busiest streets in the city. Here you will find pubs, restaurants and nightclubs that make the street a fun fair. The predominantly Muslim-inhabited district Bo-Kaap with its garishly colored houses is also one of the sights.
A tourist magnet is the former prison island Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. Since 1999, the island has been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It was used by the apartheid governments as a camp for political prisoners.
Much visited in the summer months, the tourist suburbs Camps Bay and Clifton, whose beaches are among the most visited beaches in South Africa and live almost exclusively from tourism. The Bloubergstrand in the north of the city is mostly used by water sports.
Also worth mentioning is the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden at the southern foot of Table Mountain, which was donated to the city in 1902 by Cecil Rhodes. The site was made a botanical garden in 1914 to protect the unique flora and was the first protected garden of its kind in South Africa.
At the N1 / N7 interchange, there is the large-scale Century City project, which includes a theme park (Ratanga Junction), the Canal Walk shopping mall, a casino, the Intaka Wetlands Wetlands Reserve, apartments and offices. Canal Walk offers a cinema center, numerous restaurants and two hotels.
