Public space
The public area on ODE, created by architect Agence Ter, Paris/Karlsruhe, is seen as the prerequisite for success and literal space for beauty on the island. Two large public squares form the “stages” for meetings, performances, and the ODE experience: the beautiful surroundings, the water, the buildings. Oosterdoks quay represents the face of ODE, a quay for strolling, shopping, and people watching, a place to enjoy a drink at a sidewalk café, or take the boat from the dock. Entrances to the main public and commercial functions are located in the plinth. The quay is accessible only to local traffic, and is therefore primarily occupied by people: tourists, students, visitors, cyclists, and pedestrians.
The business and logistics backbone of ODE is Oosterdoks street, which is located on the IJ riverside. This is the main access road for car traffic. Consequently, both the entrances to the underground garage and the impressive offices can be accessed via this road. Narrow, Soho-like side streets connect the Oosterdoks quay with Oosterdoks street, offering unexpected views of the sidewalk cafés located in the quay, the water, and the bustle on the other side of the river.
