In the heart of Catalonia, south of the Pre-Pyrenees, lie the charming cobblestone towns of the Alt Berguedà region. The tranquillity, fresh air and leisurely pace are a refuge from the bustle of the city. Who wouldn't want to wander through the alleys that have harboured secrets for centuries?
In the surrounding areas, the forests, rivers and peaks stand as protective guardians of the historical heritage, whilst Romanesque churches blend into the treeline. This adventure takes you high and low, to natural viewpoints, waterfalls and towns frozen in time.
This captivating loop commences in the municipality of Borredà, following the GR 241 for about 60 kilometres (31 mi). The route follows the official trail, but I've added some minor detours to explore charming corners: the Picancel and Catllaràs mountain ranges; the streams of Merlès, Mergançol, or La Clusa; iconic towns like La Nou de Berguedà and Sant Jaume de Frontanyà. I also included a detour to Vilada, a town home to architectural treasures such as the Romanesque church of Sant Romà de la Clusa and the sanctuary of Lourdes.
I've organised the itinerary into three days, with each concluding in places with available services. You can spend the first night at the Saiol campsite, so don't forget your tent and sleeping bag. The second day ends at the La Clusa shelter, which serves dinner and breakfast. I recommend booking accommodation in advance to avoid disappointment, especially during the peak season. Carry enough water and food for each stage, as there are no services along the routes.
This journey is suitable from spring to autumn, when you can enjoy the opportunity to swim in different pools along the way. However, be mindful that temperatures are higher in summer. I advise against winter due to the landscape not showcasing its full splendour and fewer available services. Pack a waterproof and a thermal layer in your backpack, just in case.
Borredà, the start and end point of the journey, is just an hour and a half by car from Barcelona, providing the most comfortable and quickest transportation. Alternatively, you can take two buses from the Alsa company (alsa.es/), first to Berga and then to Borredà.
This route is for hikers seeking an escape from the city into the tranquillity of Catalonia's interior. You should already have some experience in long-distance hiking. Three stages exceed 18 kilometres (11 mi) with significant elevation gain. Bring hiking poles and wear shoes with grippy soles.
I wish you a delightful journey through the enchanting trails of Alt Berguedà.
