Between the regions of Navarre and Guipúzcoa, in Spain’s Basque Country, an old railway line has become a serene path. The Plazaola Greenway, which winds through the valleys of the Larraun and Leitzaran rivers, reveals the natural treasures of the region as it curves around its bends.
It's not every day you get the chance to cycle in such a setting. This route is home to lush forests, rolling meadows and crystal-clear rivers with idyllic waterfalls. The smell of wet earth, the sound of birds and hundreds of shades of green combine with the charm of villages immersed in unruffled tranquillity.
The old railway line ran from Pamplona to San Sebastian stretches for almost 85 kilometres (53 mi). Although it was mainly used to transport goods, it also carried passengers until 1953. Today, only the 65 kilometres (40 mi) between Sarasa and Andoain have been recovered and restored.
The route, which is accessible in terms of distance and altitude difference, is aimed at all nature lovers and cyclists. Experienced cyclists can do the whole route in a single day, while families with children can choose to divide it into three stages, as suggested in this Collection. The route passes through places with a good choice of restaurants and accommodation. This lets you adapt the length of the stages as you wish.
Spring, summer and autumn are the best times to undertake this trip, as the temperatures are more pleasant and the scenery more beautiful. However, precipitation is frequent in these regions, so check the weather forecast before setting off. Finally, snowfall is not uncommon in winter, which would make progress difficult if you decided to set off at this time of year.
Sarasa is less than 13 kilometres (8 mi) from Pamplona. This means you can get there with your own vehicle, if you have a bike carrier, or with the Conda buses. If you choose this option, you'll have to transport your bike disassembled and in a bag, and you'll have to pay a supplement. From Andoain, you can take the Cercanías train to San Sebastian, which takes about 15 minutes. For more information on transport conditions, visit renfe.com/es/en/travel/informacion-util/luggage/bicycles-and-kick-scooters-_non-electric. From here, there are buses and trains back to Pamplona.
The terrain of the Plazaola Greenway is in good condition, with alternating gravel roads, dirt tracks and a few paved sections. That's why a gravel or touring bike is ideal for this adventure. I recommend taking enough water to get you through each day, as well as panniers so you can stop and refuel along the way. And don't forget to pack a waterproof windbreaker and clothing appropriate for the season.
Let yourself be carried away by the magic of this fantastic greenway and come back with your heart (and panniers) full of memories... Enjoy!
