The CamminaForeste reveals Lombardy's green treasures, winding through lush forests and landscapes steeped in ancient traditions. The connection between humans and nature manifests deeply in this region of northern Italy.

This third part of the CamminaForeste in Lombardy unfolds in the heart of Val Camonica over four days. It travels from Lake Idro to Lake Iseo and traverses three regional forests, Anfo-val Caffaro, Alpe Vaia, and Val Grigna, immersing you in the Brescia pre-Alps.

You’ll hike from pasture to pasture, along ancient transhumance routes, discovering how humanity has shaped these places in a harmonious balance of give and take. Each step reveals a tapestry of dense woods, steep meadows and limestone spires, offering challenges and breathtaking vistas.

To start your adventure, head to Ponte Caffaro, situated at the end of Lake Idro. A convenient option from Brescia is the Arriva line LN013, which takes you directly to Ponte Caffaro. Alternatively, during the summer months, you can opt for a scenic sail on Lake Idro. The final destination is Lovere on Lake Iseo, reachable by Bergamo Trasporti buses or with Visinoni buses or ferries from Pisogne. You can catch Trenord trains or Fnm buses from Bresica to Trenord. While this trek doesn't pose significant technical challenges, you’ll need to be fit and bring appropriate gear, especially considering the 5,000 metres (16,400 ft) of elevation gain over four days. The ideal period for this adventure is from June to September/October when the refuges along the route are open and the environment is more hospitable.

Throughout the hike, you’ll discover a world of biodiversity, where sustainable forest management isn’t just a practice but a legacy spanning millennia. Each tree species holds its unique history and purpose: larches and firs were used to build homes and beech trees provided warmth, whilst maples, ash, oak and pine had different uses ranging from art to food.

At the end of your journey, you’ll have discovered the wonders of Val Camonica and have the opportunity to extend your adventure by continuing toward Val di Scalve on the fourth stage of the CamminaForeste in Lombardia (komoot.com/collection/2478265).
