Close to nature, authentic and welcoming – that is the Sauerland region and its people. Enjoy a blend of pretty towns with cultural highlights and unspoilt countryside where even the foxes seem to be friendly. The sparsely populated region, rich in wooded areas and reservoirs, lies mainly in Westphalia with a small overlap into Hesse. The highest elevations are found in the Rothaargebirge mountains, where you can find the springs of the Ruhr and Lenne rivers.
We asked our brand ambassadors and native Sauerlanders about their favourite walks in the Schmallenberg Sauerland and Eslohe holiday region. Eight wonderful people introduced us to eight delightful, personal hikes and told us why they love the Sauerland so much. In this Collection, let a ranger reveal the most beautiful panoramas and a photographer explain the tension between art and nature. A medicinal plant educator will tell you where you can not only go for great hikes, but also find wild thyme and other herbs. You'll get to know Lauschpöhle and learn that the gold villages are not necessarily about precious metals. Before you know it, you’ll lose your heart to the Sauerland.
From the leisurely 4-kilometre (2.5 mi) loop to the 25-kilometre (15.5 mi) hike or the four-day, 73-kilometre (45 mi) expedition, there is something for every taste and every level of fitness. All starting points can be reached either by train or public bus. Timetable information can be found at rlg-online.de (in German). There are hiking taxis and buses in the region too, with information available here: schmallenberger-sauerland.de/informieren/schmallenberger-sauerland-card (in German). If you’d prefer to drive, parking is abundant.
