The wind tousles your hair, seagulls screech above you, you breathe in the salty air and listen to the gentle lapping of the waves – welcome to the Baltic Sea! Kilometres of fine sandy beaches, impressive cliffs and magnificent Baltic resorts decorate the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern coastline. Further inland and away from the sea, water still defines the landscape at the Mecklenburg Lake District. The varied nature, diverse flora and fauna and, of course, the Baltic Sea make northeast Germany well-worth exploring on foot. In this Collection, we present eight particularly beautiful walks in the region.
On these hikes, you can discover the coast from Rerik to Kühlungsborn, be amazed by the fairytale Schwerin Castle and explore the wild coastal landscapes, shaped by the wind and waves, on the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. If you would like to visit a real island then head to Rügen, Usedom or Hiddensee. Here, you find the classic Baltic Sea motifs – piers, beach chairs and lighthouses. You can hike through extensive heathlands near the Hanseatic city of Rostock or enjoy the scene of pine forests in the national park near Waren an der Müritz.
The adventures all have one thing in common – a swim in the Baltic Sea or a dip in a clear lake along the way. So don’t forget to pack your swimming gear in your rucksack! To make sure you have enough space for provisions, sunscreen, a windproof jacket (the coastal wind can be quite strong), your daypack needs to be big enough. We recommend the Futura 23 model or the Futura 21 SL model for women to ensure you have enough space for your adventures.
The hikes in this Collection are between 20 and 30 kilometres (12.4 to 18.6 miles) long. As you have hardly any elevation gain to contend with, you can take it easy and focus on having fun. There are plenty of places to stop en route for refreshments – be sure to try freshly smoked fish! If you are travelling without a car, you can easily reach all of the Tours with public transport. The Hanseatic cities of Rostock and Stralsund are ideal base camps if you plan to stay longer along the coast.
Discover the varied nature of north-eastern Germany on our daypacking adventures and enjoy a large portion of the Baltic Sea idyll. Pack your rucksack, lace up your shoes and experience the coastal region’s unique flair for yourself. You’ll soon see why Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's slogan is simply ‘MV does you good’.
