Water, meadows and forests – cycling in the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve in Germany

In Saarland, a state in western Germany, you are never far from water. From babbling brooks to pretty ponds and meandering rivers, you’ll find water in almost every form here. At times, you ride by a stream that flows beside a mill and pass a castle towering over a river that once defined ancient borders – it’s hard to find a place that’s more idyllic. The countryside here is home to many plants and animals and a wonderful place to explore up close.

In this Collection, we present four varied bike Tours in and around the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve. As water knows no borders, you also visit our French neighbours on two of the rides. The routes are carefully selected and each is dedicated to a different theme: The European Mill Cycle Route takes you to a total of 14 mills; you learn about the stork on the Adebar Loop; the Seven Ponds Tour, as the name suggests, leads you to seven lakes; and, if you’re looking for a workout in beautiful nature then the large Bliesgau Biosphere circular route is for you.

The bike paths are all signposted and mostly situated far away from traffic, leading across wide fields, through shaded forests, along rivers and past lakes. Every now and then, you have to overcome a climb, but the gentle hills create everchanging, breathtaking panoramas as far as the Vosges mountains on clear days.

You can reach all of the Tours comfortably by train. You can lose yourself entirely in Bliesgau’s beautiful nature and unique landscapes.
