Starting south of Vienna near the suburb of Inzersdorf, the Thermenradweg (Spa Cycle Route) is one of the most popular cycle paths in Lower Austria. The 53-kilometre (33 mile) route leads to Katzelsdorf, a municipality near Wiener Neustadt. It offers both enjoyable cycling and plenty of things to discover. On the way, you pass historical towns, experience unique culture through the Vienna Woods, and visit important industrial and historical monuments.

The Thermenradweg is named after the numerous springs found in the region south of Vienna which are fed by the so-called Thermenlinie (thermal fault line). Places like Baden and Bad Vöslau owe their history as spa towns to this geological fault zone. The Romans also appreciated the thermal waters and public spas still operate today such as Römertherme in Baden. As well as sophisticated spas, you also ride along the Wiener Neustädter Canal with its numerous locks and aqueducts that are not only beautiful to cycle through, but also reveal an interesting insight into the era of early industrialisation.

In 2019, some sections of the cycle path were improved and renovated. As the route is well signposted and relatively flat, it’s particularly suited to families and pleasure cyclists. However, the Thermenradweg is also interesting if you want a sporty ride as it guides you in an uncomplicated way out of the suburbs in south Vienna. You can also combine the route with other cycle paths to create a large lap with minimal traffic. For example, you can join the Triestingau Cycle Path from Schönau. The Piestingtal Cycle Path is also easy to reach. The Thermenradweg is also part of the Eurovelo 9 which leads from the Baltic Sea to the Adriatic Sea so you can ride southwards for almost as long as you like.

There’s another reason why this thermal region is so popular – for its wine and culture. On many stretches, the landscape is characterised by wine growing and there are beloved Heurigen, inns where homemade wine is served, in almost every village. An obvious end to your bike Tour is a visit to a cosy Heurigen garden where you can enjoy homemade wines and try hearty local cuisine.

If you end up taking a little longer than expected, you don’t need to worry in most places. The Südbahn train line makes it easy to return to the starting point in Vienna quickly and safely from almost anywhere along the route.
