  • The ruin Forchtenberg is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle.
To fortify his property, Konrad von Dürn built the castle on a mountain spur, which was completed in 1234. In connection with the construction of the castle is also the foundation of the 1298 first mentioned city Forchtenberg. Castle and town were expanded under Konrad's descendants and came shortly before the death of Konrad's grandson Ruprecht in 1323 to force II of Hohenlohe. The house Hohenlohe used the 92 meters long and up to 50 meters wide castle only temporarily as a residence and widow's seat.
At the time of the Renaissance, the castle was fortified.
The plant was probably shot in the Thirty Years War by Swedish troops on fire and largely destroyed. Only the preserved large vaulted cellar was expanded after 1680 and still used for storage of the wine decades. The surviving tower dates from the time of this cellar extension and was built with stones from the castle walls.
Around 1800, the plant was already in a state in need of repair. 1806 came the principality Hohenlohe by the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss to Württemberg. The necessary repairs were omitted only now, ultimately lost the house Hohenlohe any interest in the system and sold it in 1850 to the Hofküfer Carl Müller for 33 guilders. In the aftermath changed several times the owner, the plant was used as a quarry and deteriorated visibly.
In 1929, the chamber president Kurt von Kleefeld acquired the plant and invested around 10,000 marks in its repair. He died in 1934. The ruin came into the possession of a Mr. Schöppler from Esslingen. In 1937, the forester saddler Wilhelm Riehmann acquired the ruins and carried out further security measures. In the 1960s, the Landesdenkmalamt supported security measures at the collapsing southern wall.
In 1989, the city of Forchtenberg acquired the plant and led to 1995 with financial support of the State Monuments Office in the amount of 1.3 million marks, a comprehensive renovation and security through. The ruin has been open to the public since then and was used for various events. As part of a wall broke off in July 2012, the castle had to be temporarily closed to visitors. Since February 2016, the facility is accessible again and the 11.5 meter high tower can be climbed again as a lookout tower.
