The former cathedral provost is considered the most beautiful half-timbered house Hildesheim from the 18th century. Today the house houses the Masonic Lodge "Gate to the Temple of Light".Built between 1534 and 1540, the residential and representative building of the cathedral provost, Count Otto von Schaumburg, had already undergone an eventful history until its acquisition by the Masonic lodge in 1804. 1633 it sank in the siege by the imperial troops under Pappenheim as a result of artillery fire in the sea of flames. The built for the servants gate and stables building on the Keßlerstraße went out of the fire but undamaged. The provost building was rebuilt after the war in 1663 on the old foundations, much more splendid. Although from the point of view of building history it can be attributed to the Baroque, the construction system has remained similar to the old Gothic one. The catches are gone and the projections are smaller. The mezzanine does not exist. On carved filling boards was also omitted. The framework is set on a sandstone base. The façade has been enhanced by a "new" style element, the intersecting St. Andrew's crosses, leaving behind the good proportions between the substructure and the roof covered with pans.Due to the secularization, the property was sold to the merchant Krüper, who in turn sold it to the Count von Wedel, the then master of the chair of the lodge "To the silent temple". The originally three-furs house complex with a 6 m wide generous, two-lane The stairwell had a baroque hall on the west and east gable (of which only the eastern one has been preserved in the old form and version) .Over the hall buildings on the upper floor there were the representative and living rooms of the cathedral provost, with the acquisition of the house by the Masonic lodge Through constant changes a complete change took place inside the house.
