The name goes back to the prince Ratibor / Ratse, which stood at the head of the obodritischen sub-tribe of Polaben. He resided here in the early 11th century in a ringwall. Of the "Racesburg" is 1062 in a issued in Worms, but not passed recipient certificate of Henry IV the speech. In the document this gives the castle to the Billung Duke Ordulf. Also Adam of Bremen mentions 1076 the then Slavic Ratzeburg in his description of the death of Ansverus on July 15, 1066 on the Rinsberg at Einhaus over the Ratzeburg lake: Ansverus monacus et cum eo alii apud Razzisburg lapidati sunt. Idus Iulii passio illorum occurrit. (The monk Answer and others with him were stoned near Ratzeburg, their martyrdom took place on the Ides of July.) The Ansverus Cross can still be seen at the edge of the forest in Einhaus near Ratzeburg. In three attempts Christianization took place, the founding of the city and final establishment of the diocese was in 1154 by Henry the Lion (see also article bishopric Ratzeburg). Heinrich von Badeide, the first count of Ratzeburg, remembers a memorial stone erected after 1163. The stone on the cathedral island bears the (Latin) inscription:While the city later belonged to the Duchy of Saxe-Lauenburg, the later Prussian district Duchy of Lauenburg, reached the abbey area in 1648 by the Peace of Westphalia as Principality Ratzeburg in the hands of Mecklenburg and 1701 became part of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Only with the Greater Hamburg Act 1937, the cathedral district was part of the municipality.Strongly fortified in 1692 by Duke Georg Wilhelm of Braunschweig-Lüneburg, the city aroused the displeasure of the Danish King Christian V, who then reduced Ratzeburg to a more or less complete rubble in 1693 down to the cathedral peninsula, resulting in a complete reconstruction in Baroque style the model of the city of Mannheim was required. The last fortifications were removed in 1816 by the Danes.Source:

De protestantse kathedraal in Ratzeburg is een van de meest imposante gebedshuizen in Noord-Duitsland. We gingen twee dagen achter elkaar naar de kathedraal en waren beide keren onder de indruk.
