In the far east of Austria not far from Vienna, lies Lake Neusiedl, the largest endorheic lake in Europe. Nestled amongst the mountains of the Burgenland region in Austria and the lowlands of Hungary, the lake is a paradise for windsurfers and cyclists alike. In this Collection, we take you on a journey through this remarkable landscape which is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We’ve put together 5 circular routes that follow the most popular cycle paths through the region. The routes include something for everyone, such as the classic Lake Neusiedl Cycle Path around the lake, the challenging heathland cycle path around the Austria-Hungary-Slovakia border triangle, and the Lackenradweg cycle path through unique landscapes.

There is a lot to discover around the lake. For example, you can explore two nature reserves, the Nationalpark Neusiedler See - Seewinkel and the UNESCO World Heritage Site Nature Park Neusiedler See - Leithagebirge, which have diverse flora and fauna. As you ride, look out for the birdlife which is thriving here. Many water birds and curlews live in the reeds around the lake. As you cycle through the wide steppe landscape, which is home to an array of wildlife, you might feel like you are on a private cycling safari.

As well as nature, the area is rich in history. You ride through the border region between Austria, Hungary, and Slovakia which once marked the border of the Iron Curtain during the Cold War. You will also discover imposing castles and interesting buildings that delve you deeper into the history of Lake Neusiedl. When you are ready for a break, you can stop off at a historic village and wander quaint lanes and pretty streets. You may even have the chance to taste wines stored in the traditional cellars here.

The town of Neusiedl am See is the perfect starting point for your safari through the Lake Neusiedl region in Burgenland. From the town, you can reach the start of all routes by bike or public transport. You can also find ample overnight accommodation here. If you prefer camping, there are several campsites around Lake Neusiedl, some of which are directly on the lakeshore.

To make the most of your time at Lake Neusiedl, we recommend the Neusiedler See Card which gives you free use of public transport, free admission to the museums and nature parks, and admission to numerous beaches and lakeside resorts around Lake Neusiedl. The best thing: You receive the Neusiedler See Card for free when you stay at one of over 800 partner establishments.

This project is supported by the province of Burgenland.

The Neusiedler See cycle path is one of the most popular cycle paths in the region, and rightly so: Because while you enjoy the view of the lake and its reed belt on idyllic cycle paths between wet meadows, vineyards and salt varnishes, there is a lot to discover.

The festival cycle path starts in Eisenstadt, the capital of Burgenland. You should plan a good day for the entire route, but alternatively you can also spend the night in the baroque town of Rust. So you can split the entire route into two comfortable stages. There is also a campsite there.

Your tour on the cherry blossom cycle path starts in Jois, very close to the Neusiedl am See train station. With almost 50 kilometers, you can plan a good day for this tour, while still leaving you enough time to enjoy all the great sights along the way.

The Lackenradweg is also ideal for a day tour, which leaves you enough time to admire the wildlife at the salt lakes and around the lake or just stretch your legs. Again, you should definitely take binoculars with you if you have one.

The Heideweg is a rather ambitious day tour in the border triangle of Austria, Hungary and Slovakia. The bike tour starts in Kittsee, which can be skillfully reached by train from Neusiedl am See. If the route is a little too long for you, there are also various ways to shorten it.
