Idyllic vineyards, spectacular views, flat river valleys and mountainous forests — with the Saarland cycle path we present you the small federal state on a large, varied round tour in seven stages. You will discover the beautiful UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Bliesgau, cycle through the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park past the picturesque Bostal Lake and make a detour to neighbouring Lorraine and Saargemünd in the Franco-German border region. Follow the traces of the Romans, immerse yourself in the history of the ceramics industry and be impressed by the gigantic remains of the iron production of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Völklinger Hütte.
The Saarland Cycle Route is a really beautiful discovery tour and was not awarded four stars by the ADFC as a quality cycle route for nothing. You cycle through beautiful nature and always experience a characteristic of the Saarland: it is hilly. For experienced cyclists it's more of a side note, but occasional cyclists will be challenged by a hill or two. If you are not used to long climbs, it is best to plan enough time and take a break from time to time. Beautiful vantage points or cosy rest stops are enough for you to rest and recharge your batteries at any time.
Since the Saarland cycle path is a round trip, you can board wherever you like. If you want to travel by train, there is a good starting point with good rail connections. That's why we recommend Saarbrücken and St. Wendel as the starting points - Mettlach, Homburg and Perl are also well connected to the railway network. All other stages can also be reached by public transport, so that you are flexible in the event of a change in the weather or a change in plan. However, the connection is not always perfect and sometimes you have to travel a bit by bus. You will find various types of accommodation in all the stages, some even ADFC-certified Bett+Bike establishments, which are particularly well prepared for cycling guests.
