Silent forests & lonely paths — Franconian Jura Panorama Trail in Germany

Do you love to get lost in the great outdoors, hiking along idyllic country lanes, under ancient trees and through colourful landscapes? Do you enjoy looking over gentle hills blanketed in fields and forests? Then you are sure to appreciate the Franconian Jura Panorama Trail. Located to the east of Nuremberg in Germany, the trail takes you through wonderful scenery.

The Nuremberg region has a network of over 1,242 miles (2,000 km) of hiking trails to guide you on your adventure. Four of the trails have earned the title of “Quality Hiking Trail” from the German Hiking Association. In this Collection, I introduce one of these trails, the Franconian Jura Panorama Trail in three stages which wind through the unique landscape of the central Franconian Jura mountains with its unusual rock formations and romantic river valleys.

This dreamlike circular hike lets you explore the magnificent landscape of the Albach and Hammerbach valleys around Engelthal, Offenhausen and Happurg towns. Unspoilt paths and extraordinary nature make this trail a real gem for hikers. You can also expect wide views, natural springs, the impressive castles of Reicheneck and Lichtenegg, and incredible climbs and descents as well as easy sections along quiet plateaus.

Beginning in Happurg, the circular route runs for 26.7 miles (43 km). You can stay overnight in quaint, small villages en route. There is also an optional fourth route linking Hartmannshof and Happurg. You can also walk it in the opposite direction the day after the circular hike so you don’t miss the romantic Lichtenegg ruins.

You can travel to and from Happurg or Hartmannshof comfortably by train. Aart from a pair of good shoes, your rucksack filled with enough water and tasty provisions, all you need is yourself.
