The Moselle River winds in countless loops through a picturesque landscape. On both sides, impressive rock terraces rise steeply and alternate with just as vertiginous vineyards – they’re among the steepest in the country. Sometimes a fairytale castle atop one of the hills crowns the picturesque panorama or one of the idyllic small towns down in the valley delights. In the middle of this dreamlike scenario, a cycle path runs along the river and countless gravel paths and singletrack sections lead through the forest-lined vineyards.
All this combines to form a varied route along the Moselle, making for a fantastic mountain bike adventure. Across four stages, the route takes you through the beautiful landscape of the terraced Moselle from Trier to Koblenz. You can combine the individual routes as you see fit. Take it easy and enjoy a four-day adventure over the long weekend. Or combine individual stages and complete the route in two or three days. There are plenty of stations along the route and countless accommodation options to give you maximum flexibility in planning. The suggested stages (except for the final stage) all end at a campsite, so you can enjoy an exciting bikepacking adventure with the fun of camping
The individual stages are not particularly long but don't let that fool you. The terrain is very hilly, sometimes steep, and there’s a lot of elevation gain in the mix. In addition, gravel paths and undulating trails await you, which are more challenging and slower going. So, take it easy, plan refreshment stops in the cosy vineyard villages and enjoy the beautiful landscapes.
What bike is suitable for the Tours? You won't go wrong with a full-suspension bike on the downhills, but you will feel that extra weight uphill. At the very least, you should have a good hardtail and if you’re particularly skilled on a gravel bike, you can undertake this adventure with your gravel steed. Most of all, you need to have good control of your bike and be happy to dismount from time to time on singletrack. My tip is to go for a good, light hardtail, then you’re on the safe side.
